Duck Hunt Massachusetts With Baymen
Duck Hunt Massachusetts
The Baymen were up and on the water very early today for a puddle duck hunt in Massachusetts. By 4:15am, we were packing the gear out to the trucks. At 5:00am we were first in line (only one in line) at Dunkin Donuts for morning coffee. By 5:45am we were in the canoe loaded with gear, and starting the long paddle to our HOT POCKET blind, so named because it is a tiny, little pocket of water that always brings in puddle ducks in the early season. Today was no different and we had a wonderful morning.
A half-dozen blocks, mallards and blacks, and our Lucky spinner decoy we placed in the hot pocket and we pulled the canoe into the blind and hunkered down. Very warm this morning with temps in the low sixties, and a light rain. Very light south wind.
Shortly after opening hours, a nice flock of black duck cupped and committed right into the blocks. We took our daily limit of two black duck out of that flock. Later in the morning, several more black duck came into our spread and it was very cool watching them pull in, take a quick look around, and then climb for the sky.
About mid-morning, mallards came through as well as green-wing teal and we added a fine drake mallard in stunning plumage to our bag. After that, we picked up and decided to give jump shooting a try. First flock of birds to get up where three blue-wing teal. Lovely birds, but too quick for us to get a shot off. A while later, a pair of mallards went up and we missed twice. At the sound of our shots, One-hundred-fifty (150) mallards exploded off the water in back of us and filled the sky. What an amazing sight…! We quickly set up the decoy spread and pulled into a makeshift blind, hoping they would come back, but they never did.
One other awesome sight/sound this morning was hearing hundreds of Canada geese get up off the water as we paddled the canoe through them in pitch darkness. There was an amazing amount of geese on the roost and we never saw them again.
Three birds total in the bay today and we called it a great day. Two blacks and a mallard – about the finest wild game dinner birds you can get.
