OCTOBER 4th
TODAY: ENE winds cranking on the bay, seas out front 8-10 feet
Baymen had to cancel charters today due to big seas and high winds on the bay today. ENE steady at 22 knots, gusting to 30 knots or better. Obviously, birds, bait and bass are non-existent and have moved out and South. We have four more charters to complete this week before we are done fishing for the season on our bay, and then switch over to the start of duck season. We are hoping the seas lay down and we get a a few late pods of bass in our bay when we are out. Stay posted: we will post full reports of all our days on the bay right here at www.baymencharters.com
This past Friday, we also had to cancel our trip due to weather. October is always unpredictable. But on Saturday afternoon, the winds laid down flat and we were able to get our for our charter. On board, I had repeat client and friend, Richard Comstock of NYC, and his brother-in-law, Handy Wade, and Handy’s son, Jeptha. The bay was just lovely but the fish were few and far between. But my crew was relentless, we kept at it, and boated a half-dozen fish for the evening, 5 short bass and 1 blue. We did have one very big fish rise to a surface popper, swipe at it and miss. We estimated that fish to be in the twenty-pound range and forty-something inches. We all got a good look at it when it came to the surface. All the fish were very edgy, selective, and running wild around the bay. Nothing was holding and it made fishing a real challenge. Towards the end of the evening, we got into a bluefish blitz North of Clark’s Island, tight to the grass. There was maybe thirty fish in the pod, all chasing bait and ripping the water up for about two minutes. We hooked up on three, and then it was over. We never saw them again. But Jeptha was High Rod of evening, fighting and landing the majority of our fish today. At seven-years old, he is a fisherman for life!
So, today, we are sitting tight and it looks like we will be sitting in port for at least another day, maybe two or three, before these ENE winds turn West and we can get back out. Will there be any fish in the bay…? We just wont know until we get out there. This time of year, October, we could go for days without seeing a fish, and then, if we are in the right spot at the right time, a small pod could come through for thirty minutes and gives us a grand end to the season. We will just have to wait and see. The good news is, the hunting seasons began to open in a few days and we will be off and gunning.

Time For Duck Hunting
TIME FOR DUCK HUNTING
The Massachusetts sea duck season opens on Saturday, October 9th, and the Mass puddle duck season (central zone) opens October 14th – the same day as woodcock. The coastal puddle duck season opens a day later on October 15th.

The fishing season in our bay is about done. We have a few more trips on the books and are hoping some October bass make a stong appearance, but the fall fish have been few. It has been an excellent season overall and now we turn our thoughts and desires to the hunting season.
