Sep 2, 2010 500PM HURRICANE TRACK – Hurricane Warning

14 Fish, 35″ Inch Blue, Keeper Bass… Happy September! **BE PREPARED FOR HURRICANE EARL**

Capt. Dave’s BAYMEN Fishing Report – Wednesday, September 1st. www.baymencharters.com (781) 934-2838. Book your fall striper blitz charters now.

TODAY: On board this morning, I had repeat client Thomas Knapp and his son, Jackson (6). Light tackle and fly fishing for striped bass and blues. At first light, we found top-water action with birds working overhead. About half the number of fish in the bay today compared to yesterday, and they were very spooky. But we persisted and the Tom and his son boated a total of 14 fish: 1 Keeper striped bass, 1 whopping 35″ inch blue, and 12 shorts. A great morning on the bay with temps in the 90′s when we came back in!

Baymen has some dates left for September and early October charters. Call for pricing and availability.

HURRICANE EARL!!!! Monster Blues, Plenty of Bass in Bay…

STORM WARNING…!!!
Hurricane Earl is slated to hit the Massachusetts coast on Friday, September 3rd. Watch NOAA Marine Weather for the latest updates…!!!
TODAY: Monster Blues, Plenty of Bass In Bay…
Ran recon this morning on the bay with Roger & Chloe. We found fall stripers on top-water in four of my spots. We also found monster blues to 38″ inches – in two and half feet of water!!! Amazing action on light tackle gear! I may be wrong, but I think the fish are on the feed with the low pressure STORM on the way up the coast. We could get a good hurricane out of this (?) and the fish seem to sense it. Several acres of bass were working under birds, and many schools of fish with no birds. There is a lot of bait in the bay of various sizes and the bass and blues are on it. We boated five keeper stripers just 28″ inches but saw what looked like forty inch stripers on top-water but never landed one. The blues however, were big – up to 38 inches. These are monster blues inside the bay. They are not here in great numbers – only a handful. But boy, are they fun! “Fight Harder, Taste Better!” I love them on the grill and Roger loves to smoke them.
Back out in the morning with my charters. A full report to follow. WATCH THE HURRICANE UPDATES!!!

AUGUST 27th: EAST WIND STORM COOLS BAY BITE

Capt. Dave’s
BAYMEN Fishing Report Duxbury, Kingston, Plymouth Massachusetts
www.baymencharters.com (781) 934-2838
FRIDAY August 27th
TODAY
We just came off three days of pounding East winds with ten foot waves onshore. I gave the bay one day to settle down, and then we went out this morning. It was dead out there, with very, very few fish in the bay at the moment. That will change, but it may take another tide or two or more… Time will tell. That said, SANTA, King Of The Powder Point Bridge, managed a nice keeper this morning of about 18 pounds, on chunk bait off the bridge at dead-low tide. He also caught two sharks. A few schoolies were around the bridge as well.
We are scheduled to be back on the water in the morning, but are watching the fishing conditions to see if things improve. Stay posted. Its going to turn around big time, but I’m just not sure when. A day or two or a week….

Weekend Report August 22
YESTERDAY MORNING
On board yesterday morning, I had good friend and repeat client, Richard Comstock of New York. Richard is a hard-core fly rodder. No other gear allowed on the boat! Richard has been fishing with me for many years and fishes with me several times a season. Yesterday, he brought sunflower seeds, his new fishing hat ( a gift from his good friends in Atlanta), and his fly rods with floating, intermediate, and sinking lines. At first light, we were treated to a stunning sunrise in paradise. I never, ever get tired of seeing that and can’t resist taking a few pictures.
It was another flat-calm, lovely morning on the water. We have had the season of seasons for weather this year. High tides took us up tight to shore and down bay into Plymouth where we found tons of top-water striped bass working under birds (thanks, Ian!). They were skittish and very spooky of the boat noise. But we were relentless, however, and Richard put his fly into breaking fish consistently.
We also figured out that many fish were hugging the bottom in 7-12 feet of water and used the cast and count technique to get the fly down to them. The fly of choice this morning was Capt. Dave’s Baymen Universal. They hammered it!
I also want to say, I fought back emotions as I tied on a fly by the Late John Cook of Duxbury. John gave me one of his fly patterns in my shop about nine years ago. John was a superb fly rodder and fly tier and would stop by Baymen Outfitters from time to time to swap fishing stories. He tied a small gray and white minnow pattern with a braided head, that has caught striped bass in our bay when nothing else will. The pattern I had was one he had tied up just before he passed away, and the striped bass slammed it yesterday morning. The photos tell the rest of story and my charter, Richard Comstock, was in good trim and on his mark. He is a superb fly caster!
YESTERDAY EVENING
What a difference a few hours and a change of tide can make. The winds turned EAST on us for the evening charter and I was a little concerned it may slow the bite. “Winds from the East, fishing the least…” Jack Manly, his son-in-law, and his grandson (9 years old) from CT. were on board for our evening charter. Cool, chilly winds on the dead-low incoming tide. But, last week in east winds, I had a soldier on board from Iraq, and his three children, and the bass were stacked up! So, I was hopeful again this evening… We worked around the bay and saw no top-water action to speak of. We started to fish some structure on the incoming tide and on my demo cast to demonstrate the Baymen Bounce with the rubber crank baits, WHAM! Fish on! It was a cocktail blue and for the next hour, my charters hammered the small blues and Matt, the grandson, had a ball!
After catching all the blues we wanted, we moved around the bay with light tackle in search of bass. Matt boated one bass in two feet of water. Then, I decided we better fish some bait in the usual spots to hook into some big bass for the cooler. We hit three tried and true spots around the bay and it was hopeless. The EAST winds shut the bite down cold and the bass were no where to be found. We filleted our blues and Matt and his father enjoyed some bluefish sushi and also took home a bunch of fillets for the grill. A chilly evening, but we made the best of it and had a lot of fun!
East winds and rain on tap for most of the week ahead. We are watching the weather carefully and will post our reports and photos on the BAYMEN website at www.baymencharters.com each day for the rest of the season. Please pass the word… And if you are heading out this week, best of luck!

August 19th – Top-water action picking up!

Capt. Dave’s
BAYMEN Report Duxbury Plymouth Massachusetts
www.baymencharters.com (781) 934-2838
August 19th
TODAY: Top-Water Action continues…
A quick report for today. I left the camera at home (!). Ran out for a short trip this morning at 6:30am. Sun was way to high for me – I’m usually on the bay a half-hour before it rises. But fish were still here. Several very small pods of striped bass in the bay, working under the birds. First two casts of the morning yielded two fish: a 27″ and a 30″ incher. We picked up several more shorts, but the goal this morning was to Re-Con the bay and see where the fish were and what they were doing for upcoming charters. I think it is going to just get better and better right into the fall. Lots of bait around – mumachogs, green crabs, immature blues, butterfish, hickory shad, and a few others I am not sure what they are. “Rainbait” is showing in the bay and reports from other anglers of birds and top-water from Duxbury, Plymouth, Kingston and up towards Scituate and down towards the canal continue to pour in. All good news… Small blues are in the bay with one or two big ones mixed in. Bass in the bay are all sizes – except the twinkies. We have not seen tiny bass in the bay at all this season. Everything has been in the mid-twenty inches up through the whoppers’ in the thirty-pound class. A ton of stripers in the mid-teens to low twenty pound range.

STRIPER BLITZ IN FOG – Bass to 41″ Inches!

Capt. Dave’s
BAYMEN Fishing Reports Massachusetts
www.baymencharters.com (781) 934-2838
TUESDAY, AUGUST 17th
TODAY: Dense Fog, High Tide, Clearing Storm = Top-Water Striper Blitz…!!!
On board today, I had repeat clients Rolando Jeeter, Dr. Play, and his son for some light tackle striped bass and blues fishing. We barely got out of the harbor and there was a major striper blitz in dense fog over Captain’s Flat. We pulled into an acre of birds and breaking fish and first cast of the morning: Keepah! It only got better from there. Dr. Play starting throwing top-water plugs and Keepah #2 comes aboard. Then, Rolando’s bubble gum sluggo with a jig weight gets hit hard. BIG FISH takes line… Five minutes later, Rolando is still fighting the fish in seven feet of water! Rolondo says, “Capt. Dave this is a big fish…” We all stop and watch him fight the fish and walk it around the boat. Rolando has been fishing with BAYMEN for six years and he has landed a 38″ and a 40″ with Capt. Dave on light tackle. He thinks this one is bigger…! The fish finally gets near the boat and we all get a look: BIG, WIDE FISH on the bubble gum. A few more runs and we get the big fish into the the net and hoist is aboard: a 41″ Inch Cow on light tackle!!! All in all, we boated a bunch of bass this morning with three keepers in the mix. The best fishing was in the dense fog, all on top-water sight fishing.
