SUMMER SOLSTICE… Happy Summer from Capt. Dave & The Baymen!
Lovely, flat calm morning on the bay today, but very slow fishing. Water temps are high, and bass are scarce in the bay at the moment. On board today I had repeat client, Kevin Erickson (who landed a 40” inch LT bass on a popper with Baymen a few weeeks ago, and a 38” incher with us last season), Kevin’s grandson, Matt, and repeat client and friend, Gary Condon, CEO of Affordable Closet Systems. We fished light tackle and bait and it was slow. But we kept at it, enjoyed a lovely morning and a full lunch on the bay at 10:00am! Thanks, guys! Ten striped bass total this morning, including one keeper landed by Matt.

FRESH & SALTWATER GUIDED FISHING ON THE MASSACHUSETTS COAST!
1 Bass Tonight, Bait & Bass Have Left The Bay…
Ran out front tonight with my charters to jig macks. One hour, one mack. Ran back inside and bought a flat of mack. Had visions of this morning’s madness with tons of runs of bait. Fished five of my spots this evening. Two runs total. No bait or bass in the bay tonight. The Spring Blitz 2012 is about over and the summer fishing has started.

8 Keepers This Morning to 36+ Inches
On board this morning I had first-time clients, Ed Foley and friends from Kingston. At first light on the dropping tide it was slim pickins. It was calm and we decided to run out front and jig for macks. Decent action and we put about a dozen mack in the livewell. Back inside, we started to hit my spots and hooked up almost immediately, 3 runs on 3 drifts. We fished five of my spots total and boated about a dozen fish, eight of them keepers to 36+ inches. We livelined, whole-dead drifted, and chunked. It did not matter, the bass were active and hit all our baits. We dropped quite a few fish, but still ended the morning with plenty of fillets for the freezer for this charter. Back out shortly for my second charter of the day. Stay posted: – Capt. 8 Fish, 6 Keepers to 43” Inches!!!
On board this morning, I had repeat clients, Dwight Pierce, Jay Cohen, and John Soucy. We started the morning with light tackle and Jay put a nice keeper in the box. Some more LT and then we ran out front to jig macks. Very slow jigging but we got about ten macks after an hour and ran back inside. First drift: WHAM! A corker of a bass slammed John’s mack and it was a BFO! An awesome fight with some light coaching by Capt. Dave. The fish was on the surface several times and our eyes got big! This was a BIG bass… John got it by the boat and Capt. Dave got two hands into the mouth abnd hoisted it over the gunwale. The bass taped out to 43” inches and weighed nearly as much. we set two more drifts and hooked up three more times, landing two more keepers. Then we ran across the bay to working birds and bass and boated two more keepers. Total catch for the morning was 8 stripers, and 6 keepers to 43” inches. John Soucy is new high rod on Baymen Charters at the moment, beating out Kevin Erickson’s 40” incher and Allen Uhler’s 42” incher (sorry guys!). Back at it in the morning…

Marshall McBean Gets 16lber on Baymen Universal!
Expert Fly Rodder, Marshall McBean of MN, fishes our waters here on the Massachusetts coast for about a month each year. He recently fished Cuttyhunk with Capt. Dave’s fly, the Baymen Universal saltwater fly pattern, and landed a sixteen pound striper on the fly! Way to go Marshall and many more to you throughout the season!

30 Fish, 9 Keepers, all on Light Tackle Today… World-Class Striper Fishing on the Massachusetts Coast!
On board today, repeat clients, Gary Condon, CEO of Affordable Closet Systems, Gary’s friend Ray, and their friend, Kevin Erickson who caught a 40” with Baymen two weeks ago. The trio fish with Baymen about six times a season. Today was another epic morning on the Massachusetts Coast with 30 fish boated on LT, including 9 keepers, all on light tackle top-water. Once again, the biggest fish were taken on hard-bodied poppers in white/blue and white/red with Capt. Dave’s white saddle hackles tied into the tail of the rear hook. Small fish ignore it, big fish slam it! Fewer fish, but bigger fish. Give it a try! Here are some photos from today on the bay.

25 STRIPERS, 8 KEEPERS on Light Tackle
On board this morning I had new client, Allen Uhler, his wife, Julie, and her sister Susan from South Carolina. It was an amazing morning and we slammed them! Allen landed our biggest fish of the season on light tackle, beating out a 40” incher landed on the Baymen boat by Kevin Erickson two weeks ago (sorry Kevin!). All of this morning’s 25 stripers and 8 keepers were landed on light tackle rubber crank baits, with the exception of our two biggest fish. Those massive stripers were landed on a blue/white hard-bodied popper with Capt. Dave’s white saddle hackles tied into the rear hook. About six inches of feathers off the back. The big bass have been slamming these poppers rigged this way all season. Today was no different. We estimated our biggest bass this morning topped thirty pounds. Our second biggest was in the low twenty pounds. The other six keepers were about twelve pounds each. What a season it has been thus far. Last year, I said it was the best bass season in ten years. This year is even better!
See you out there or call me to book a trip.

FRESH & SALTWATER GUIIDED FISHING ON THE MASSACHUSETTS COAST!
8 Fish, 3 Keepers
On board today, I had the pleasure of guiding Dino Calucci’s son, David, and David’s three friends, Billy, Harry, and Matt. At first light, we had a school of fish surrounded by a half-dozen boats. But the fish were spooked, very selective, and eventually broke up. We began recon around the bay and found a few other schools of bass under birds, but they too were very spooky, selective, and moving out of the bay fast on the dropping tide.
We looped around Kingston and Plymouth and then made tracks offshore to jig for bait. It was a little choppy and we took a good pounding on the way out. In fact it was so windy/choppy, that my bucket blew out of the back of the boat and I never knew it until miles later.
We set up drifts and had about twenty baits in no time, and started back inside to live-line and chunk.
We set up drifts in four or five of my spots and had about a dozen runs total.
We dropped a few fish and then started to put some bass in the boat after some pretty good fights.
The boys boated a total of eight fish, three of them keepers.
They endured rain, chop, wind, and hard fishing. But they were relentless and got the job done and had a blast fishing on the bay!

35 STRIPERS THIS MORNING – Bay Loaded At First Light
On board this morning, I had first-time clients Dino Calucci, his brother Darren, and their friend Tom. Fly Fishing was the tool of the choice and all three anglers are excellent fly rodders. At first light we were into massive numbers of top-water striped bass, some of the schools over an acre across. It was an amazing spring blitz that lasted for several hours before the schools started to thin out and break up. “World-Class” and “amazing” were the phrases that kept coming up. I was more excited than anyone to see that many fish on top-water, letting us set up numerous drifts over them. We ended the morning with 35 stripers to 34” inches, most of them taken on fly gear. The fly pattern of choice was a two inch clouser in olive/white that I tied up last night especially for this trip. The Baymen Universal has to take a back-seat until this tiny baitfish that is in the bay right now, changes up to a lager bait. Another awesome day on the South Shore of Massachusetts! – Capt.
